Call for Papers to ICT for Philippine Development
21-22 September 2012
Quezon City
It has been some time since a conference has been held in the Philippines on the growing relevance of new information and communication technologies in Philippine development. Mobile phones and the Internet are now an essential part of everyday life. Global movements such as the ‘Arab Spring’, local political events discussed in the new media (e.g. online journalism, blogging, Twitter, etc), the continuing expansion of employment in ‘Call Centers’ (BPO), the growth of the e-economy, the need to maintain contact with relatives overseas and the extraordinary popularity of social media such as Facebook are among the most noticeable instances of the importance of new communication technologies.
The Philippines, as the rest of the world, is experiencing social, political and economic transformations caused or influenced by the rapid development of communications. Increasingly, our personal and collective lives are shaped by the new media. Even the mainstream and traditional media (newspapers, radio, TV and film) are adjusting to the new technology. It is time to reflect on and analyze the consequences and implications of these changes for global, national and everyday life.
As such, the Philippine ICT Research Network, the Center for Leadership, Citizenship and Democracy, Ideacorp, and the Institute of Philippine Culture invite you to participate and submit an abstract to the ICT for Philippine Development conference, or ICT4phD.
The event will be a two-day conference that will be held from September 21-22, 2012 at the Philippine Social Science Center (PSSC) in Quezon City.
Some of the topics and panels that will be discussed in the conference include:
· ICT and Governmentality (includes efficiency, transparency, mobilization but also surveillance and control)
· The New Media and Development (the mobile revolution, e-economy)
· The Significance of Social Media (celebrification of everyday life)
· ICT, Diaspora and Globalization (transnational identity, OFWs, etc)
· ICTs, Disaster Management, and Environmental Sustainability
Deadline for the submission of abstracts will be on May 31, 2012. Abstracts may be sent to the Secretariat at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
